Who are the favorites?

Viktor Hovland had to withdraw during the second round of last week’s U.S Open due to an injury. The young Norwegian got some sand in his eye during the warm up and after a few holes it was clear that he wouldn’t be able to complete his round. Hovland, ranked 14th in the world, is yet to win on the European Team. He has two top 3s in his last five torunaments worldwide.

Louis Oosthuizen

Louis Oosthuizen arrives in Munich after another strong major performance. The South African finished second at the U.S Open which was his sixth runner-up finish in a major. Oosthuizen, who has nine European Tour titles under his belt, hasn’t won since December 2018 when lifted the trophy at the South African Open. The South African is T2-T18-2-T8 in his last four starts and no doubt he will try to forget the disappointment from Torrey Pines with a win this week at the BMW International Open.

Bernd Wiesberger didn’t have an impressive performance at the U.S Open where he missed the cut, but the Austrian is one of the highest ranked players in the field this week. Earlier this month the Austrian claimed his eight European Tour title after winning the Made in HimmerLand. Wiesberger needs solid performance in Germany to keep his Ryder Cup dreams alive.

Form-horse

Dean Burmester

Dean Burmester was off since the PGA Championship where he finished tied for 59th. The South African arrived at Kiawah Island with high confidence as he had a win and two top 10s in his last three starts. Burmester is a two-time European Tour winner and knows what is needed for a win.

Wildcard

Edoardo Molinari

Edoardo Molinari played solid golf last week at the U.S Open and finished tied for 35th. Two weeks ago at the Porsche European Open, another event held in Germany, the elder Molinari brother shared second place. In 2019 when the BMW International open was played for the last time (in 2020 it was cancelled due to the COVID-19) Edoardo Molinari finished tied for third.
