Three unexpected contenders after day one of the 2021 PGA Championship

As expected The Ocean Course was a big challenge for the best players in the world during the first round of the 103rd PGA Championship. Only 40 golfers played the course on better in day one and we already see some surprising names on the first page of the leaderboard.

Cam Davis had a dynamic day on the course and carded an eagle, four birdies and a triple bogey on his way to first round 69. The Australian (age 26) is still looking for his maiden PGA Tour title. Davis had only one major appearance prior this week. At the 2018 Open he finished tied for 39th. If he win on Sunday he will become the first Australian to lift the he Wanamaker Trophy since Jason Day in 2015.

Martin Laird - T8 after day one (three behind the leader)

Martin Laird is in the field this week thanks to his triumph at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open last October. Since then the Scot has played in 13 tournaments where he missed six cuts and had only one finish inside the top 25. Laird's career performance at majors is not very impressive either. Laird, who is four-time PGA Tour winner, has played in 22 majors where he made nine cuts. His best major result to date is T20 at the 2011 Masters Tournament.

Rickie Fowler - T16 after day one (four behind the leader)

I know, I know. A five-time PGA Tour winner and a The Players champion shouldn't be a surprise if is the mix in a major, but Rickie's recent form is far from impressive. He is playing this week thanks to a special exemption he received from the PGA. Fowler missed the cut in five of his last ten starts and dropped to 128th in the world. His last top 10 on the PGA Tour was at The American Express in January 2020!
